Sydney’s Glebe…historical Bohemian hot-spot

A historical walk from University hall (cnr Parra Rd + Glebe Pt Rd) through to Sydney Fish Markets with lots of architecture and history along the way. Glebe Point Road is also filled with funky cafes and restaurants. Plus, if you do this walk on a Saturday you will happen across Glebe’s Saturday market…well worth checking out.

Starting the tour

University hall (cnr Parra Rd + Glebe Pt Rd)

Section 1:
Directions:

Walk down Parramatta Road (away from the city) and turn into Derwent St (1st on right.) School War Memorial on your right.

School War Memorial (Glebe Public School)

Section 2:
Directions:

Turn left into Catherine Street (1st on left,) and continue down to Westmoreland St (2nd on right.) Halfway down on right: ‘Elsie’ first Women’s Refuge in Oz.

Section 3:
Directions:

Cont down to end of Westmoreland. Turn left + down St Johns Rd until you reach Glebe Town Hall. Turn around and walk back up St Johns Rd. Federation Style Fire Station on your left, followed by St John’s Parish Hall on your right.

Directions:

Cont down St Johns Rd…on corner of Glebe Point Rd you will see St John’s Bishopthorpe. Continue along Glebe Point Rd. You will see Foley Park on your left.

Directions:

Turn left into Bridge Rd (1st on left,) continue along until you see Reuss House and The Abbey.

Turn back around and straight down Bridge Rd until you hit Lyndhurst (61 Darghan St.)

Wentworth Park is at the top of Bridge Road.

Walk back down Bridge Road, turn right back into Glebe Point Road until you hit the Valhalla Cinema on your left (by the intersection with Hereford St.)

Continue along Glebe Point Rd. Benledi House will be on your left (just before Wigram road x-road.)

Continue down Glebe Point Rd. At the intersection with Boyce St is Bidura (to your right.) Turn left into Boyce Street. Tranby cottage on your left (near intersection with Avenue Road (to right).)

Walk down Avenue Road, you will see Toxeth Park to your left (nearest x-road Arcadia Road.)

Continue down Avenue Rd turning right into Victoria Rd then left into Edward Street, the Sze Yup Temple on your left.

Turn back and to Victoria Rd, turning right into Alexandra Rd. You will come to Jubilee Park, continue along Bicentennial Park and through to the foreshore walk to Bellevue.

Keep going along the foreshore walk until you reach the Burley Griffin Incinerator to your right (towards the back of the park.)

Walk down Taylor St turning left into Pyrmont Bridge Road. You will come to Sydney Fish markets on your left…well worth a look.

Directions:

Continue along Bridge St crossing over Pitt St with the ASX/Australian Stock Exchange and The Old Exchange Hotel in the vicinity. Continue along Bridge, with Headquarters of Burns Philip and The Metropolitan Hotel to your left.

Directions:

Turn right into George St and the first left into Grosvenor St. Grovenor Place is to your right and St Patrick’s Church straight ahead near Harrington St.

Continue right into Harrington St. You will pass under the Cumberland Expressway. Follow the old worn steps (to your left) up to Cumberland Place. Susannah Place is in the vicinity (to your right) and the Australian Hotel as you turn right into Gloucester St is on your left at the intersection with Cumberland Street.

After walking a short way down Cumberland Street you need to take the subway that goes underneath the Harbour Bridge Stairs. Directly before you is observatory hill + park.

The National Trust Centre is back in the other direction, around the hill from the observatory.

Coming out of The Paddock head along the lane to your left (halfway up Ferry Lane) take the steps on the right. On the corner is Private museum Clyde Bank, and opposite: The Harbour View Hotel. Head back into George Street (north, towards The Rocks) and you will pass Sydney’s last remaining cast iron urinal on your right. On the other side of the road is Dawes Point/Tarra.

Dare to Cross King’s Cross…taking in Sydney’s Red Light District

Starting at King’s Cross Station the tour takes you along Darlinghurst Road through Elizabeth Bay, Wooloomooloo and Victoria Street, finishing Nimrod Street Theatre.

Outside the station, turn left along Darlinghurst Road where there is lots to see and do. The Fitzroy Gardens are at the end of the street.

Turn left along Macleay St until you get to Orwell St (1st on left.)

Turn back to where you came from retracing steps along Orwell St, left into Macleay St, left into Hughes St where you will find The Wayside Chapel to your left.

Turn right into Tusculum St, then right again into Manning Street where you will find the Tusculum to your right.

Continue to the end of Manning St, turn right into Macleay St again, then left into Greenknowe Ave (2nd on left.) Kingsclere is the corner building that you can’t miss.

Continue along Greenknowe Ave turning left towards the end at Onslow Ave. Onslow Ave becomes Onslow Place with Elizabeth Bay House smack bang in the centre. Continue along again coming around and back down Billyard Ave to Boomerang.

Retrace your journey back down Billyard Avenue past McElhone Reserve. You will find a little stairway across the road. Go up the stairs. You will reach a ‘dog-leg’ footpath between apartments which will lead you back to Macleay Street. Turn left into Macleay St then left into Rockwall Crescent. Where you will pass Rockwall on your left.

Turn back around to where you have come from, turning left into Macleay St. You can wander all the way down to the end of Wydle St if you feel like a view of the Harbour (passing ‘The Yellow House’ to your left on the way.)

If you turn into Challis Ave (off Macleay St) you will pass Garcia Centre for Performing Arts on your left.

St Vincent’s College is at the end of Challis Ave, near the intersection with Victoria St where you turn left. Not far up to your right you will find McElhone stairs. Take these to see Sydney’s Wooloomooloo.

Turn back onto Victoria Street, turning right away fron the water.

Further along Victoria St you will find ‘The Butler Stairs’ to your right, and 202 Victoria St to your left.

Cont all the way along Victoria St to reach ‘The Cross,’ where all intersections converge.

You continue along Victoria St (crossing ‘The Cross’ on the way) into Darlinghurst. Left into Craigend st and right into Nimrod St where you will find the Nimrod theatre to your left.
