Get a handle on the famous Melbourne grid and see some of the southern capital’s highlights.
Flinders Street Station, Melbourne.
Stay put, because you’re about to have a look around the station itself.
Flinders Station is a landmark of the city and where you’ll go if any local ever instructs you to meet them on the steps. It’s opposite the beautiful St Paul’s Cathedral and one of the city’s oldest pubs, Young and Jacksons. Each weekday, more than 110,000 commuters and 1500 trains come through this station. (And, if you’re staying nearby and are REALLY scabby there are often giveaways at the station in the morning peak, but they’re irregular so you’d have to be really hungry to bother!)
Only a couple minutes walk from the station, over the Princes Bridge to cross the river and you are there – you can’t miss the Eureka Tower as it’s the tallest building in the city by a long way.
and feel the full force of the winds at this height. It’s amazing.
The observation deck interior has been designed to reflect the topography of Melbourne and is thus quite undulating, which can be a little disconcerting. Lines on the walls and ceiling indicate major landmarks and cardinal points. There’s lots of information up here that might just inspire you to do some more wandering around once you’re back down on the ground.
Make your way from the Eureka Tower and in to Southgate.
There are some great restaurants here, a decent enough food court if you’re hungry or you can just grab a gelato from Trampoline and head back towards St Kilda Road and the Princes Bridge.
Cross St Kilda Road from outside the Arts Centre and head down the ramp or the stairs and in to Alexandra Gardens.
Alexandra Gardens. The gardens are part of the Domain Parklands that fringe the Yarra and really are stunning. They were first laid out in 1904, under the direction of Carlo Catani. You wouldn’t believe that you are only minutes away from the CBD in these peaceful gardens.
If you like, you can hire bicycles here and go for a ride to explore more of the river’s edge and its delights.
