McMahons Point Meander

There are plenty of places to pick up some yummy lunch, but this walk could very happily culminate in a picnic – so bring your blanket if you have one!

Starting the tour

North Sydney station

Section 1:
Directions:

Exit North Sydney station on the Blues Street side, turn left and when you hit Blues Point Road, turn left (at the Zurich building).

Stopover:

The first eye-catcher is on the right. St Peter’s Presbyterian church is known locally for its beautiful stained-glass windows, carved cedar pulpit and choir gallery. Look out for its pipe organ as well. This grand instrument dates back to 1885. The church has strong connections with Dr John Flynn, founder of the Flying Doctor Service of Australia. He became a member of St Peter’s in 1914. You might notice a plaque dedicated to him within the church.

Section 2:
Directions:

Continue down the hill on Blues Point Road (away from North Sydney station) and you’ll cross the border into McMahons Point.

Stopover:

Food I Love, at 186 Blues Point Road, is aptly named. The friendly staff and delicious food and drinks are reason enough to part with a few pennies. Pull up a chair and enjoy a $5 morning deal of coffee and a cakey treat (such as banana bread or a muffin). If you fancy some lunch, an array of pastas and salads are sure to please.

Section 3:
Directions:

Back onto Blues Point Road in the same direction.

Stopover:

Now you’ll pass a buzzing strip of cafes, restaurants, clothes and knick-knack shops. Tucked away down a corridor is one of the best yoga studios in Sydney – North Sydney yoga, 144 Blues Point Road. If you’re a fan of the Ashtanga style (the practice is suitable for all levels and can be as calm or aerobic as you want it to be), pop on in for a lunch class on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Classes cost $17 for one hour.

Section 4:
Directions:

Cross the road.

Stopover:

In the midst of the buzz is a heavenly, tranquil, blessedly independent bookshop. Another McMahons Point gem. Blues Point Bookshop is on 131 Blues Point Road and if they don’t have your book, they’ll happily order it for you.

Section 5:
Directions:

Continue in the same direction. Soon you’ll see harbour water.

Stopover:

McMahons Point affords one of the most spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. You can clearly (and closely) see the bridge, the opera house, the Sydney Theatre Company and Luna Park. There is a small incline on the grassy hill, but not enough of one to dissuade picnickers. There’s also a little play area for kids.

Section 6:
Directions:

McMahons Point ferry stop is just around the bend. The ferry will take you to Circular Quay. Otherwise, it’s back up Blues Point Road to North Sydney train station.
